I only have chaeto and 2 live rock in mine, no sand.
Use 5100K or 6500k yellow light spectrum or your plant will die.
Besides lighting from above, I increased lighting by getting a clip on lamp from Home Depot and shined up at the refugium from below it. Just remember to swing it out of the way when you work on the refugium so salt water doesn't drip onto the lamp below.
PRO: Copepods are also growing in it.
CON: My nitrate increased from 10-15 unless I suck out the dead chaeto sitting at the bottom, so a clean bottom without sand is best for me.

Great product, easy to install. I place the this HOB refugium on a 30"x18"x12" 29 gallon saltwater tank. Just had enough room to be placed side by side with my AquaC Remora HOB Skimmer. I put 3 inches of sand bed, some rubble rocks and a portion of chato and caulerpa. Service and delivery was great. Mike was of great help regarding my inquiry, will do business again with Aquacave.
