The 900 skimmer as is, is moderate at best, after 2 years of tinkering with much aggravation, and with the help from Reef Central,I finally put into place a $5.00 part on the wastemate and had excellent results.The part is a plastic gate valve on the exhaust of the skimmer to retard the air by about a half,which gave me the .5mm bubbles a skimmer needs, not the don't worry about the bubble size you get from etss. the bubbles for two years were huge and the skimmer surged all the time, producing very weak skimmate at best.
