set your instrument to zero and start your readings.the refractometer that I had was starting to slip off on its readings,so far so good with this one.

This is much more reliable versus hydrometers. I thought my salinity was at 1.022 with the hydrometer only to find out it was 1.028. So, this definitely was helpful in me bringing the Sg to around 1.023 where I keep it now. Fewer fish have died since so it pays for itself!

Nice piece of equipment. Very heavy/sturdy. I like it, but cannot make a comparison to cheaper models.

If you don't have one of these get one. The first time I used it I found out my salinity was a full 10 ppt too high. Make this tool part of your arsenal.

This is a great product! For the price of what marine fish cost this is a small price to pay to be sure your salinity is correct. The problem with those cheap $15 hydrometers is that the readings taken with them is never consistent because they tend to get bubbles on the swing arm throwing your reading off as well as other factors such as the temp of your water. In my experience you would b wise to throw your old hydrometer away and buy a refractometer such as this one.
