Works as advertised. Powerful and really quite. I put the Vortech MP40W ES and the Vortech MP10W ES on my 90 gallon reef with great results. I use anti-sync mode to get the water gently surging back and forth. Hard to imagine a sane person would consider the combined price of these two powerheads to be worth it but, the corals look better than they ever have. They make reef tank look authentic! Worth the money.

The idea of a through the glass driven powerhead is just plain overdue. Keeping heat and clutter out of the tank is good engineering. The prop style pump moves plenty of water. The Eco Smart driver is gadgety but effective. Varying flow patterns is a natural. I use just one of the various modes and pretty much leave it at that. The downsides: the "night mode" setting loses about a half hour each day, so if you set it at, say, 10:00PM....eventually it'll be on night mode in the middle of the day! But like a clock that don't work, at some point it'll be correct. Noise...low speeds no problem. But when it winds up to the upper RPMs it sounds like the family station wagon on a trip to Florida with a bad differential.....that honing sound that varies with speed. For the most part that is not a problem, except at night when all is quiet and its most prominent...which is when you program it for the "night mode" setting...except remember what happens to the "night mode" setting?! All in all this is a great system but with a few kinks to iron out. Its high dollar and high tech. I use it, I like it, I recommend it and I wish I invented it.

Setup:
75 gallon reef tank
Mag 9.5 return pump
mp40es w power head
80 lbs of live rock
various sps, lps, some soft coral
Creates excellent water flow within the aquarium. Can create a slight wave - almost 2.0 inches.
Polyps extension on coral is good; Polyps are not being ripped off or blown away.
On Nutrient Export and Short Pulse mode you can definitely hear the pump rev up. You will hear it slightly over the overflow trickle noise of the water.
The best and most compelling reason to buy this product is the current (undertow) it creates within the aquarium. There are no dead spots whatsoever. The flow is extremely wide. My skimmer is much more effective.
I did purchase the battery backup unit, which works very well.
The quality of both units is excellent. Both are very well built.
