I have used halide and power compact by themselves and mixed together. I have had this fixture for about a year and a half on my 20 gallon nano reef, (zoos, rics and various star polyps and mush.), and I have to say this is the best light quality I have ever had. My corals are growing over the top of each other. I really liked the halide shimmer, but the heat radiation just was not an option on my little nano reef. I also like the fact I only have to change bulbs once a year instead of every 6 months, and the output stays strong over the life of the bulb.
