  1. Ikea filter Review by Hydromatic
    Product Rating:

I call the Ikea filter because the amount of assembly is amazing. First off I give 5 for the improvement to the tank, but it is not worth the hassle. There is no way that you are threading a new roll in the sump. You need to remove it from the feed hose and take out. At 17 microns I believe I saw on Youtube I'm changing every 2-3 weeks. At 29 bucks a roll, you do the math. Also as calcifying organisms grow on the surfaces they can snag the roll and jam it up. (Posted on 2/3/2019)

  2. Very Pleased Review by Ken F
    Product Rating:

I am in process of setting up system so haven't used my CS 5000 yet, but am quite pleased with the unit as assembled. The product comes in "knocked-down" form (think Ikea!), so you have to put it together. The various acrylic panels are all nicely machined and come with protective liners still in place to keep them nice looking. The included assembly instructions leave a little to be desired -- a series of photographs of one in process of being assembled, which are too small to see what's going on clearly -- but the online video will get you through it. It took about an hour to assemble going back and forth between the video and the parts, but it should take no more than ten or fifteen minutes for me to set up the second when I purchase it.

Speaking of second, I will be using two on a 250, and I will have them in a 20-gallon high tank upstream of my sump. The sump doesn't have filter sock holders, and I first bought a couple Roller Mats, but was going to need a third to handle the flow I plan to put through the system given the flow-rate capability of the RMs. That was just going to take up too much space, even in the dedicated fish room behind the tank. Also, I have seen mixed reviews of the RM motors, so I sold the RMs. I was considering getting a couple Klir filters, but that would have required separate brackets and, with that, the cost per unit would have been the same. I also am not sure re how the flow rates compare.... I've seen positive reviews of the ClariSea and like the configuration, so wanted to see how they would work for my build configuration. They will work great!

So as noted, I will have a 20-gallon high plumbed in-line upstream of the sump, with pair of the Clarisea filters installed side-by-side on one of the long walls. Flow will come in via 1.5" line and split into two 1" lines via a true wye (from FlexPVC.com). With unions and sweep elbows to turn the flow down, the 1" feeder lines to the ClariSeas are about 7" apart from each other. The feeder lines will extend down between the hanging brackets (AMPLE size and flexibility of hanging height) to enter the 1" inlet to the unit. And even with this spread between units, two will fit nicely into the 20 high, with about two inches to spare on all sides.

One small complaint. Recommended configuration of the inlet bar extending across the unit (at the bottom of the box) is to have the flow-exit slots pointed down, to minimize surface splashing. But depending on how the threads on the bar are oriented (i.e., rotational position), you could end up with the slots facing up if you screw on the provided elbow all the way and want the elbow to be pointed up (or some other orientation of the elbow you want). So it might be the case that the elbow has to be slightly looser than full seat in order to have the setup orientation you want.

Re the motor, seems very sturdy. Low speed, high torque should lead to dependable service. Supply of clean floss comes off smoothly and consistently.

All in all very pleased. (Posted on 9/29/2018)
