Tunze Macro Algae Reactor 3181

Macro Algae Reactor – Bioremediation for freshwater and saltwater aquariums

For the bioremediation of an ecosystem, live plants and macro algae
can be excellent biological detoxifiers.
Chaetomorpha “Spaghetti Algae” is cultured by many marine aquarists to eliminate nitrates and phosphates from the aquatic biotope. It is absolutely sufficient to harvest a handful of algae from time to time to maintain the biological balance in an aquarium – an economical and easy alternative to many chemicals or resins.
Naja Grass, Najas guadalupensis, can be grown to purify freshwater
systems, such as cichlid biotopes.
TUNZE® MAR 3181 and 3182 can be placed in any filter basin or next to the aquarium without external filter technology.
The water circulation in the reactor ensures the rotation of the algae culture and thus reduces the number of light sources accompanied by strong plant growth. However, additional light sources can be added to the device as needed.

For aquariums from 100 to 600 liters (26 - 159 USgal.).
Flow rate adjustable from 1,000 to 2,400 l/h (264 - 634 USgal.).
Energy consumption of the pump: approx. 10 to 31 W
Energy consumption of the LED: 9 W
Measurements of the reactor (L x W x H):
233 x 195 x 422 mm (9.2" x 7.7" x 16.6")

With Comline® pump 2500 electronic and Turbelle® Controller basic 7090.200.

Functions of the TUNZE® algae reactor MAR 3181:
- Cultivation of algae in seawater and plants in freshwater
- Biological detoxification of ecosystems by algae / plants
- Reduction of nitrate and phosphate content
- Filtration of the aquarium water
- Production of food supplement for fish
- Zooplankton refuge, serving as food for corals and fish
- Enrichment of the water with oxygen

Good, other than the supplied pump,

Posted by John on Jan 24th 2024

This algae reactor is nice because it can be mounted outside your sump. It had no leaks; the light seems very bright. The only negative is the hopelessly underpowered water pump. Having only a small amount of macro algae (chaeto) inside, it would stop spinning within a few minutes, no matter what speed you set the pump to. I ended up replacing the pump with a hygger 1060GPH DC Water Pump. With the replacement pump set to %30 speed, the macro algae spins continuously like it's supposed to. Tunze really needs to provide a decent pump for the algae reactor for the price they charge. <br>

    Just what I needed

I am very happy with the unit. I would have liked some plumbing fitting kit options. It is better suited for a sump out of the box.

    Awesome reactor

It was a toss-up between this one and the skimz internal reactor and I decided on the tunze because I didn't want my sump cramped, so far it's working great better growth than any of my diy reactors. I really like the fact the led bar is external. Tunze makes great products and this is no exception it's built like a tank
